A New Family Tradition

We wanted to do a little something to give back in celebration of Martin Luther King Day - a small way of showing our appreciation to those who came before us to make our world a better place. Michael and I were excited about starting this new family tradition. Growing up, Michael's family would serve a Thanksgiving meal to the needy in his hometown of Conroe. So we wanted to try to follow in those footsteps. We turned to The Samaritan Inn, the only homeless shelter in Collin County. After a little research and a few emails, we determined that we could provide/serve a meal but the kids were too young to participate. Since we wanted the kids to be a big part of this, we decided to make a donation of items on their "most needed" list.

Hannah and I headed to Target and bought paper towels, kleenex, shampoo, trash bags and baby monitors. She was so cute picking out items for each member of our family. We also threw in some baby formula we had at home that we didn't need.

We delivered the items to the Inn and the staff was very appreciative. We were hoping to get a tour of the facility but the lady we spoke with was not available when we arrived. Hannah was disappointed but was able to get a few answers to her questions. :)

The big kids were so helpful unloading and passing off the items. They were obviously proud and we were thrilled to see their giving spirit.

We hope to be able to continue supporting this charity over the years. My bucket list includes doing more hands-on charity work after the kids get older, maybe head up a mission supported by our church. I really feel called to do this, just need to wait for the right season and understand how I can use the gifts God has given me. In the meantime, I hope this small contribution helped others, even if just a little bit.
