Luke is 2 1/2 today! This post is all about him (over past 4-6 months)...just so we don't forget...
1. You call yourself Lukie, by fault of your parents who can't seem to stop calling you by your baby nickname.
2. Your favorite joke is "hot dog...he he". Not sure why this gets you so tickled, but it's pretty cute. You've expanded this to "Star Wars...he he", "Duck....he he" or anything else that may strike you as funny.
3. When your body is ready, potty training should be easy. You understand all that goes into using the restroom, you are an excellent flusher, wiper and hand washer. You insist on practicing these skills most days, but have yet to figure out how to actually eliminate in the potty. :(
4. You love to go to the park to slide and swing. You would swing all day if given the chance. You enjoy bubble machines and operating them. You love to play with your trains, toy tools, soccer balls and matchbox cars. You have an interest in music and can hold a tune - you sing the Star Wars theme song very, very well and ask to listen to it and the "ring song" (classical song from Little Einstein's cartoon). You are attracted to playing with small household appliances: vacuum cleaner, blow dryer, phones, electric pencil sharpener - anything that is operational and mechanical. You enjoy books before sleep and in the car. Your favorites are Good Night Little One, Sandra Boynton books, Go, Do, Go!, Are you my Mother?, Thomas the Train and Little Einstein books.
5. You can count to 10 and are working up to 20, you know your basic shapes, all your colors and you like to tell us what color everything is. You are a visual learner. We are working with a speech therapist a few times a month to help with your reception (understanding) skills. You are improving every day and should catch up very soon.
6. Doors...oh the doors! We can't go anywhere without you investigating and trying out all the doors. Each is different and opens and closes in varying ways. The automatic doors are the most entertaining. What a thrill to run up to them, make them open and run through them.
7. Anything with a hinge-like mechanism is pretty cool too - toilet flushers, book spines, scissors, calculator covers, cabinets, garage doors...these are your favorites and I often catch you studying how they work. A future engineer perhaps?
8. We have 4 baby basic picture word books and on the cover of one is a picture of two kittens. One day you picked it up and said, "Cat's a MESSSSSS!" Not sure why you said this, but it has become a running joke around the house.
9. When something doesn't work exactly the way you want it to, you say "It's broken!" This works to our advantage when we need to move away from something or on to something else, but I don't think this trick will work much longer.
10. You are GREAT at transitioning from one activity to another. It's fairly easy for you to leave fun environments when the time comes, you rarely have a hard time separating from us when leaving you at school or church. You do a good job of holding your emotions in check - rarely do you throw a temper tantrum. However....
11. You have a tendency to hit and push when frustrated. Your advancement in speech has helped some but there are times when that red headed temper gets the best of you. Today, your little friend Justin wouldn't let you in his fort so you swatted him on the head. Straight to the "corner" (timeout).
12. Your favorite foods are pizza, yogurt, fresh fruit and meat. You take after your Dad and you shy away from cheese and pasta but you would eat Fiber One cereal for breakfast every day if we'd let you. That stuff goes right through your little body.
13. Some favorite sayings: "Wait your turn", "Stop it!", "One more time", "I want tracks/Star Wars/pool/snacks/nilk (milk)/cawie (color)", "No hit, no push", "Thank you Mommy" (this one gets me every time b/c you it often and unprompted).
14. For several months you fought going down to sleep when I put you to bed. But when Michael would put you down, you wouldn't make a peep. So frustrating! Fortunately, this phase is now OVER!
15. So cute: Darth Vador is "bad boy". You say "help" with two syllables and a big time Southern accent ("haylp"). You've starting talking to your favorite things, "Come on, gigi, let's go!". You love me to sing you the happy birthday song and insert your friend's and family's names and also just things you like, "Happy Birthday to flowers". So silly! The best is when I leave the room for nap time you tell me, "Mommy go talk on the phone". Is that what he thinks I do during nap time? :)
16. You love to say the Wilkins family blessing at mealtime. You ask to hold hands, bow your head and look around to see if we are following your lead. Then you recite the prayer as best you can, ending with a big, "AMEN!"
